2020 Annual Meeting: B108 How to Address Depression and Suicide Risk
Depression is very common among patients with COPD as well as cardiovascular disease, and is a major cause of disability because it reduces quality of life and adherence to treatment. In fact, some studies suggest that depression has a greater impact on quality of life in these patients than symptom severity. In addition, it is also reported that a substantial percentage of these patients endorse suicidal ideation. Although evidence-based assessment tools and therapies have increased our ability to diagnose and manage depression and suicidal ideation, sub-optimal efficacy in terms of evaluation and treatment remain common concerns. One challenge is that existing assessment tools do not effectively account for the overlap between depressive and somatic symptoms. To address this issue, a practical approach that considers both evidence-based quantitative and qualitative assessment techniques will be presented. Suggested qualitative questions, as well as methods of asking them to patients, will be discussed. The recommended process from screening to referral will also be presented. Finally, from an intervention perspective, practical guidelines for bio-psycho-social management that optimizes collaborative ongoing patient involvement will be discussed. These assessment guidelines and practical skills are relevant for all rehabilitation professionals within the multidisciplinary team.
