Decreased muscular strength, balance deficits, and frailty are common characteristics in people enrolled in pulmonary rehab. This session will provide specific methods and approaches on ways to assess and address muscular strength, balance, and frailty in patients with pulmonary conditions. The most up to date, current evidence-based recommendations will be provided when available. Specific screening and/or assessment strategies, safety and practical considerations, information on how to interpret outcomes, and recommendations and/or interventions based on out outcomes will be discussed. Individualization of care is essential to assessing and addressing the comprehensive needs of our patients. This session will help to provide awareness of common coexisting conditions, their relevance, and how to consider them into your individualized treatment plan.
- Define and establish the relevance of frailty and discuss assessment and intervention strategies
- Discuss appropriate tests and outcome measures for assessing muscular strength and current recommendations for resistance training in pulmonary rehab
- Describe balance assessments appropriate to use in pulmonary rehab
- Discuss practical strategies of how to incorporate assessments and interventions for strength, balance, and frailty in your pulmonary rehab programs
