With advances in early diagnosis and management in oncology, an increasing number of cancer survivors are living with and beyond cancer. Oncologic therapeutics, including radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapies, contribute significantly to survivorship but also have toxicities affecting many organ systems and specifically the heart and cardiovascular system. Along with prolonged life comes increased cardiovascular morbidity and there is a growing field of cardio-oncology to specifically address this need. In conjunction, the field of cardio-oncologic rehabilitation is growing to address the comprehensive and diverse rehabilitation needs of cancer survivors with heart disease. This session will address the diagnoses that may qualify cancer survivors for cardiac rehabilitation as well as prepare the attendee to identify and manage the cancer treatment related complexities and comorbidities that will need to be managed by a comprehensive rehabilitation team. Specific focus will be given to toxicities associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors which tend to mimic autoimmune conditions and cardiovascular events including myocarditis, pericarditis, arrhythmias, impaired ventricular function with heart failure, vasculitis, and venous thromboembolism. Opportunities to develop and grow existing cardiac rehabilitation programs to accommodate a cardio-oncologic population will be discussed.
- Session participants will understand the growing numbers of individuals living with and beyond cancer and their requirement for cardiac rehabilitation
- Session participants will appreciate the diverse cardiovascular consequences of oncologic therapeutic agents including radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapies
- Session participants will understand how to develop their cardiac rehabilitation program to address the complexities seen in individuals requiring cardiac rehabilitation due to oncologic management
- Session participants will be able to discuss requirements for program growth and business opportunities in cardio-oncologic rehabilitation
